There are a number of procedures that may be of benefit to patients in whom snoring is a primary complaint.
Injection snoreplasty, where a small volume of sclerosant is injected into the soft palate. This causes stiffening of the palate and a reduction in snoring. The improvement is often temporary although may last for some years.
This procedure is done under local anaesthetic and takes approximately 20 minutes. An ulcer may appear at the injection site and this heals over 1–2 weeks. There is some associated discomfort and simple pain relief is often required.
Other surgical procedures to improve the airways and reduce snoring include septoplasty, tonsillectomy and "UPPP" (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty). These operations require a general anaesthetic.
The improvement lasts longer than injection snoreplasty, although the effect can still reduce over 10–20 years.
